Hotkeys

Defaults, reassignment, and the edge cases.

Wisspa is a hotkey app — these are the five keys that run it, and everything about making them yours.

Defaults

Action Default What it does
Dictation Cmd+Shift+Space Hold, speak, release — cleaned text lands at your cursor
Action mode Cmd+Shift+A Speak a voice command ("take a screenshot")
Prompt mode Cmd+Shift+P Speak rough intent, get a structured prompt
Command mode Cmd+Shift+C Rewrite the selected text with a spoken instruction
Cancel Esc Abort the in-flight recording, no API call

All five are push-and-hold by default: hold to record, release to process. Prefer toggle? Settings → General → Recording mode — press once to start, press again to stop.

Reassigning

Settings → Hotkeys (or during onboarding — the step is fully editable):

  1. Click Change on any row.
  2. Press your new combo. Modifiers show live as you hold them.
  3. Done — it's saved and re-registered immediately, no restart.

While a row is capturing, Wisspa pauses all global shortcuts — that's deliberate. It's how your keystrokes reach the settings window instead of triggering dictation. Pressing Esc with no modifiers cancels the capture without changing anything.

Single keys work too: F18, F19, or any function key makes a great one-finger push-to-talk. If your combo is already claimed by another app, Wisspa says so and keeps the previous one — nothing is left unregistered.

There's also a Reset to defaults link if you tie yourself in knots.

Picking good hotkeys

  • Modifier combos (Cmd, Ctrl, Alt, Shift + key) are safest from accidental triggers.
  • Single function keys are fastest to press — F18+ barely exist in other apps' shortcuts.
  • Avoid combos your most-used apps already own (your editor's Cmd+Shift+P is the command palette — pick something else).
  • Esc as cancel is worth keeping: it's the one key you can find mid-sentence without looking.

Edge cases worth knowing

  • Reassignment "doesn't register": if you clicked Change and walked away mid-capture, the shortcuts stay paused until you press Esc or pick a combo. Press Esc, then Change again.
  • Hotkey works but pastes into the wrong app: that's not the hotkey — it's focus. See Troubleshooting.
  • Toggle vs hold confusion: in toggle mode, pressing the hotkey while recording stops the recording; Esc still cancels outright.
